Warrington’s Own Buses has overhauled its fleet management with the introduction of a new digital system from Freeway Fleet Systems.  Used to manage a new fleet of Volvo electric buses, the system has replaced a largely manual, paper-based system used in engineering.

The company has retired its entire diesel fleet, replacing it with 105 electric vehicles (EVs)—one of the largest orders for electric buses in the UK. Powered by renewable electricity, the initiative is designed to be as green and carbon-neutral as possible. A brand-new electrified depot has also been built, with upgraded facilities and IT infrastructure to enhance bus maintenance, reliability, and customer service.

Freeway was introduced specifically for the new EV fleet, playing a key role in commissioning the buses. Technicians have been equipped with rugged tablets running a mobile web app, eliminating the need for traditional paperwork.

Karl Hutchison, Engineering Director, commented: “We are always looking to improve our systems, and we aligned this with the introduction of the new buses. The support from Freeway has been excellent throughout.”

Warrington’s Own Buses has also integrated all electric bus parts into Freeway. By the time the final diesel bus is retired, stores and purchasing operations will benefit from automated processes, including barcoded bins, auto-replenishment, and real-time tracking of parts performance and costs.

“Freeway drives improved compliance, and the standout benefit is quality control,” Karl added. “We can instantly see what has been done, supported by photographic evidence. The system ensures every job is completed thoroughly, with digital proof to back it up.”
