Freeway launches smartphone app for bus driver walk-around checks
London, 13 January 2016 – Fleet management software company Freeway has launched a mobile application for bus and coach driver walk-around checks. Designed to run on any mobile device, including smartphones and tablets, the easy to use app eliminates paperwork and ensures that drivers complete their pre-journey checks properly. By guiding drivers through checks and ensuring good working practice, operators are assured that stringent safety procedures are adhered to, reducing risks.
According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), 85 percent of the issues found during roadside checks should have been picked up by the driver, either during a walk-around inspection prior to the journey, or by noticing changes in the vehicle’s performance whilst on the road. These issues can result in fixed penalties, endorsements for the driver, a record of failing on the operator’s licence and changes to the Operator Compliance Risk Score (OCRS).
Designed for pre-use and daily walk-around checks, the Freeway app takes bus and coach drivers through each check with simple buttons for quick and easy data entry. If a defect is recorded, a list drops down with options describing the nature of the defect. Drivers can use the device to take photographs of the defect, which are saved as part of the defect report.
The app records the vehicle’s location via GPS and links automatically to Freeway’s fleet management software used in the workshop. On the completion of the checks, the data is sent to the fleet management system alerting fleet managers of defects and allowing immediate action to be taken to rectify any critical defects.
“The importance of correctly carrying out pre-journey checks cannot be emphasised enough,” said Patrick Tandy, Managing Director, Freeway Fleet Systems. “Detecting and addressing an issue prior to sending a vehicle out on the road reduces the risk of accidents, extends the life of the vehicle and avoids penalties for safety infringements. As the last checkpoint before the vehicle starts its journey, it’s important to help the driver to complete his pre-trip inspection properly and thoroughly.”
